Division Two Coach of the Year - Matthew Newby

After great success during both Division Two and Division Four league play, England Basketball has recognized the hard work and achievement of both of our Men’s senior teams.  With the announcement of the Senior National Leagues Coaches and Players of the year, Leeds Carnegie Basketball are proud to announce their saw their name three times.  Matthew Newby has now been named Coach of the Year for an unprecedented third year in a row.  Coach Newby’s efforts and success has been recognized in both Division Four and Division Three in previous years and now he can add Coach of the Year Division Two to his CV.

Joining Coach Newby in the Division Two awards Leeds Carnegie player Robert Stockwell has been named Player of the Year.  Averaging 19 points, 6.25 Rebounds and 2.3 Assists per game, Rob helped lead Carnegie to the Division Two League Championship, the Patron’s Cup Title, a Semi final berth in the National Cup and the Division Two Playoff final.

The newly formed Division Four Men’s team was also recognized when Coach James Bambury was named Coach of the Year for Division Four.  This award is accepted by Coach Bambury but is very much as a result of a strong team effort.  Coach Matthew Morely, David Kent, Ben Pickles and Matthew Newby all had a hand in helping the Division Four team to the North League title as well as being a Division Four Playoff Finalist.  Each of these coaches is extremely proud of the Division Four Men’s team and knows that it was the team’s incredible work ethic and team cohesion that lead to Coach Bambury being honoured with this award.

Leeds Carnegie Are Latest Clubmark Club

March 20th, 2009
clubmark_logo_2clr_s-web
We are pleased to annouce that Leeds Carnegie Basketball has been award the Clubmark Club status.  The following is a post of our accomplishment that can be found on the England Basketball Wesbite:
Leeds Carnegie have become the latest club to achieve Sport England - England Basketball Clubmark accreditation.

Following on from their senior teams’ success on the court, with the Men’s 1st team winning Division Two and the Patrons Cup and the 2nd team finishing top of Division Four North, this accreditation highlights the positive work being done by the junior section of the club.

The Senior Men’s Head Coach, Matt Newby, stated: “We at Leeds Carnegie are excited about our Clubmark endorsement. I would like to thank the volunteers, parents and coaches within our club structure who are working to replicate the success that the senior programme has experienced at a junior level. I would also like to thank the staff at England Basketball for their support in helping us develop our club structure.”

“It has been a three year development that has seen the growth of strong partnership between Leeds Met University and Carr Manor High School. This relationship will elevate the programme by providing a performance pathway from primary education all the way through to Higher Education. We have aspirations of establishing ourselves alongside the big names in youth basketball like Manchester and Sheffield, emulating the community development and sustained growth that is apparent in such areas, Clubmark is an excellent route map for clubs to develop and certainly an exercise which more groups should be undertaking.”

England Basketball’s Clubmark Assessor, Craig Costello stated: “The development of the junior section of Leeds Carnegie is testament to the sort of thing that can be achieved by clubs who forge strong links with local schools.”

“Their Clubmark submission showed that the club are providing a safe and positive environment for their young members, which is the main focus of the Clubmark accreditation.”

Coach’s Corner for the Weekend of 02/21 - 02/22

February 20th, 2009

newby1

Saturday

We are coming up against a University of Birmingham team that has seen some massive improvements in their play over the past two weekends playing within 7 points of the hard surging Kent Crusaders after getting their first win of their Division Two League campaign two weeks ago against the Northampton Neptunes.

The University of Birmingham roster is very athletic and will be looking to use their athleticism to counteract the size and strength of our guys.

Sunday

Today’s game will be a grudge match of sorts for two members of the Leeds Carnegie Division Four team as both Matt Morley (the head coach) and Lawrence Smith (player) have strong ties to the opponent the Tees Valley Mohawks. Both Coach Morley (a current Division One player for Tees Valley) and Lawrence (a former Division Four player) were in fine form during the last game as Coach Morley lead Leeds Carnegie D4 to a convincing victory behind Lawrence’s break-out game of the year where he scored 22 points including 4 three pointers.

Tees Valley will be looking to avenge the previous loss as they are fighting hard for their playoff lives. With a win today Tees Valley would be making the jump from good team to playoff contender.

The Carnegie D4 squad are also looking to prove a point today as they lost their first game at home last weekend to the Stockport Falcons. The game was well played and will hopefully serve as a warning that on any given day teams in Division Four will be competitive.
