Coach Profiles
Matt is originally from the small town of Endicott, New York about 200 miles north of New York City, USA. He has enjoyed a successful basketball playing career starting at his high school, Union Endicott, where he adopted a love for the game while developing as a player. After graduating high school Matt attended St. John Fisher College in Rochester, NY, a NCAA Division III School. As a Student Athlete at Fisher Matt compiled a 3.2 grade point average graduating with a History Degree after four years.
On the basketball court Matt scored 951 points (top 25 in Schools history), 105 three pointers (top 10 in School history), and in his senior season led the team in scoring (12ppg), shooting percentage (49%) and three point percentage (45%). More importantly during his four year tenure at Fisher the Cardinals won their conference 3 times and made it to the NCAA tournament 3 times with a record of 74 wins 33 losses.
After graduating Matt became the graduate assistant coach at St. John Fisher where he earned a Masters Degree in Literacy Education and helped the basketball team reach the elite 8 of the NCAA tournament, the best season in School history. Matt was then lucky enough to have met Matt Newby in the States consequently giving him an opportunity to come over to England, pursue another Masters in Sport and Leisure, and continue his playing career with Leeds Carnegie.
The past two seasons Carnegie has won league titles in National League Division IV and III and been promoted in subsequent years. After finishing most of his studies in 2008 Matt has joined the Tees Valley Mohawks of National League Division I where he is playing this season. Also, because of coaching changes at Carnegie this year Matt has inherited the Leeds Carnegie II team. Matt is delighted with the opportunity saying, “Carnegie has a great history of coaching and success in sport. It is an honour to be part of the Carnegie tradition again and to be back into coaching is fantastic. I hope to enhance the programme here that Matt (Newby) has already done a great job in launching.” Ultimately, Matt would like to become a head coach of a college programme in the states.
